Odd Whistle...

My girlfriend just picked up a 90 DX 4Dr for $650 CDN and it's got a crappy aftermarket cassette deck in it...but until she saves the money to get a decent head unit she has to make due...the odd thing that I can't figure out is when she accelerates she is getting a weird whistle from the speakers...the more she speeds up...the louder it gets, then levels off. It is also effected by the level of the sound...meaning, it does it worse at some volumes than at others.
Is there something I can do to remedy this until she get the better head unit installed? What do I look for? and how do I fix it?
(I know this is probably something very basic...but I am still learning the "electrical" world of automotive)

Thanks,

Jason

Re: Odd Whistle...

I don't what causes it but I remember my dad's chevy did this also...and if you turn the radio off thewhistle stops...it's weird and very annoying because whenever you start getting higher in rpms, the sound gets higher as well

Re: Odd Whistle...

it is called alternator whine. you can A) deal with it, or B) put a filter onto the power leads of the radio. i'm sure some of the more experienced guys will have other solutions. on honda's i believe there is a radio noise suppressor wired to the distributor, i dont know if they are replacable or not.

When you say a filter what exactly do you mean...do you have a link showing me one so I know what I'm looking for? Expensive?

Re: Odd Whistle...

just walk into radio shack and ask for a 12 volt noise suppressor, they'll hand you exactly what you need. its nothin but a couple capacitor-lookin things.

Well.. if your truly experienced. Than go check all wires running along the alternator side of the car. Could possibly be some exposed wire somewhere that is grounding out. I know for amps, when you ground it, you dont want do it on the alternator side. So perhaps its the same.
