Fog Lights

Just wondering if anyone has any Ideas for Silverado fog light. My truck didn;t come with any but instead of buying any from the dealership for $90 +, I would like to get aftermarket lights and set them up just like stock ones. Let me know what you think!

Re: Fog Lights

2001, the flare where the lights go is allready open so I think that all I would have to do is mount the lights in the spot but I would like to set it in the program so that when the driving lights kick on, the fog light turn on too.

Re: Fog Lights

I sprung for the GM fog light kit for about 90.00. They bolt right up, 1//2 of the wiring is all done, the other 1/2 comes in the kit, the switch is just a snap in replacement, the circuit breaker comes in the kit and plugs right into the power center. Comes with great directions. It took about 45 minutes and is a seamless installation. The other option is to try to find a simalarly shaped aftermarket light, spend 2 hours cobbling a mount that puts the light in the hole in the bumper. Then a couple of hours wiring them up, cutting a hole somewhere in the dash for an aftermarket switch, spending 2 more hours figuring out why they dont work, etc. etc. I think the 90 bucks is money well spent. I am going by the dealer tomorrow to have them enter the code to allow the computer to recognise the fog lights.

Re: Fog Lights

LMAO, I know the truth behind the frustration of aftermarket installs. When you go to the dealer ask them if there is a way to get the FL's to automatically turn on with the low beams. Why don't you post a thread on this site to see if someone can just tell you a trick to program them in yourself. Hell it worked with my keyless entry

Re: Fog Lights

I will probably go through the dealer to get these, install sound fairly simple. Just wonder if once the wiring harness is installed if you can repalce the existing light with another

Tim, what wiring was missing when you did the kit? I would think that the wires to the fog lights are missing, but where was the connection for them? Where was the circuit breaker wire located? I'm asking because I want to try and use this wiring to turn on the strobe light kits I already have in the truck. Right now I'm using a switch box, but I think it would look a lot better if I used a factory switch. Thx

Re: Fog Lights

Hi Bim,
Nothing was missing, what I meant was 1/2 of the wiring was already in place. The cab wiring is there, you take out the cargo light switch and install the combo cargo / fog light switch. The circuit breaker is just pressed into its location in the main power center. The rest of the harness plugs into the bottom of the power dist. box and then runs down to the lights. Check ebay for the lights, you may find a deal. I got mine on ebay for 85, plus 13 s/h. Are they going for 90 over the counter at the dealers? It also cost 12 dollars for the dealer to enter the code and activate them, but they also washed it so the 12 was a good deal.

I too bought fog lights on eBay but haven't recieved them yet. What is this about a code? They won't work when I plug them in? The ad says they are a factory option and you just install them.

Re: Fog Lights

Hi Sonny,
I dont know why, but after you install the kit, the computer will not recognise that it has fog lights. It only takes the dealer a few minutes and you are in business.

Re: Fog Lights

Thanks Powerwagontim...I avoid the Chevy dealer on my side of town like the plague. Every time I have gone in to ask the service department a question they look at me like I have a third eye and to this date have never given me any good information. The other dealers are a long way from me. Oh well, looks like I'm in for a road trip.

Re: Fog Lights

Hi Sonny,
I know what you mean, I dont know if these guys are trained to give wrong answers or if they are stupid naturally. I have just about given up trying to get information out of a dealer.

Re: Fog Lights

I know nobody is close to me at all, but the dealership in Tifton, Ga (Prince Automotive) is about the most awsome I've come across. I guess because the guy in the service dept. is not much older than me. (22) He helped me out with anything I asked him. Just wanted to say that there are some "good" dealerships out there

Re: Fog Lights

I bet that there is a way to program it without dishing out money to the dealership. If you can program the keyless remote there has got to be a way.....
