Unhappy 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

Hello Accord Gurus,

I am unable to pinpoint the source of this noise from a 93 Accord.

I am kinda interested in Cars and the things under the hood . But this noise has led me nowhere.

It sounds like mild scrapping. One can hear that when I press the gas pedal. There is no noise when the engine idles (its smooth). The noise doen't come from the engine, but somewhere close to the mount or something.

Can you guys be of help in letting me know the probably cause?

Thanks a ton!

I'm assuming yes, but does it do it both when you are driving and when you are stopped and just revving the gas? Is the car and auto or 5 spd? A little more info is needed.

Ok, next question, does it happen all the time when you drive and rev, or is it just for the first couple seconds of taking off and revving? I mean is it constant all the time or does it eventually go away after a little time?

Its easy to listen to when its idling and when the gas pedal is pressed. my guess is that is happens only when the gas pedal is pressed (idling, revving and/or while in motion).

Otherwise the engine runs smooth.....

The noise also appears to come from driver side...around the area where the belts are. Car has done 75K miles. The timing belts dont seem to have problem......

Thanks ......

I dont think you understood the question, I think he was asking if the noise occurs constantly while driving or just for a moment during acceleration then goes away.

Re: 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

you had a good guess on the engine mount... i would have that checked first. I assumed that you mean the mount on the timing belt/accesories side of the engine. Also, could you describe the scraping noise? im trying to make a mental sound but having no luck

Re: 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

oops, i should have read the above posts better... i have another guess too, it might be your alternator bearings going bad? you stated that the noise was not coming from the engine, but by the mount, so that could also be a suspect, just trying to inform you of the possibilites? BTW, what is the mileage on the alternator, or is it the original?

Re: Re: 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

The noise is something like metal parts rubbing...not very loud though!

I suspected the Alternator bearing; Thats replaced as well. Its brand new. The alternator bearing noise more like a clicking noise.

But this noise persists...and its not from the alternator side. More towards the driver side.

Does it happen the whole time you are accelerating or just for the first instant you push on the gas? It doesn't sound like an engine problem at all. At first I was thinking a loose belt myself, but if it's not that loud, that most likely isn't it. One other thing, does the noise go away once the car is warm? The best thing to do is pop the hood and pull on the throttle to rev the engine. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I can post a pic for you. It could be your throttle cable or throttle body itself if it sounds like it's close.

Re: 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

Yes....the noise occurs during acceleration. I am sure there is some mild noise at cruising speeds, but I am unable to hear it (probably masked by road and wind noise). It doesn't go away even if the car is warm.

It will be great if you can post this pic for me

I will also have the alternator / bearing checked up.

Re: 93 Accord - Unfamiliar Engine Noise

It may be your Wheel hub bearing. I had that problem with my Accord recently. It sounds like a engine grind or ruff sounding revving. but this would only happen the faster you go and when hitting the gas. But only when the car is in motion meaning the wheels are turning. It gets louder after time.

The arrow is pointing to the place where the throttle cable connects to the throttle body. All you have to do is start the car, pop the hood and turn that thing where the cable connects. I believe you have to turn it counterclockwise if I remember right. Just give it a couple revs or until you can pinpoint where the sound is. Then let us know.
