do automatics need BOVs?

do they need them? do they make that cool sound?

the transmission has nothing to do with whether or not the engine needs a BOV/DV. What determines this is whether or not the engine has a turbocharger. If it has a turbocharger, then yes it does need either a Blow-Off Valve or a Diverter Valve (sometimes known as a recirculating valve). You need a DV if you have a closed loop turbo system and a BOV if you have a open loop turbo system. BOV's do make that (what some people call) "cool" sound. DV's are a lot quieter.
