Im looking at getting a CRX but my friend told me I should get a 2nd gen one, but I have no idea what the differences are between the two. Im on a limited budget so I cant just buy anyone. I know the early first gens had receded headlights, and I dont want that. Any other changes? Thanks

The 1st gen ones are very boxy. Plus you can do alot more (and much easier) with the 2nd gen ones.

everything is dif.look at this rex and tell me wich one u want to buy. No but really 2nd gen has way more aftermarket crap out for it. I not too sure if you can swap any vtec moptor into it if you plan on doin this i might be wrong tho.Get a 2nd gen there sexy as hell and not in a gay way.oh yeah if money is no object get a jdm 2nd gen

A SOHC ZC is prety much the same thing as a stock crx SI engine which is a d16a6. I think they have the same HP. So i would stay with the stock engine unless you want to go v-tech or B series

Stop listning to your friend. It sounds like he/she knows the lingo but not the cars.

Re: Differences between 1st gen and 2nd gen CRX's
yep put a dohc zc in it. Very cheap. Use the si tranny and axles and ecu, all you need is to bolt the engine in. Plus they can be had for around 500.00 and hp=~125-138~

Re: Differences between 1st gen and 2nd gen CRX's
1st gen dohc zc= 129hp @ 6800/106tq @ 5700
2nd gen dohc zc= 137hp @ 6800/108tq @ 5700 rpm sohc d16a6= 108hp @ 6000 rpm/100tq @ 5000rpm sohc vtec= d16z6 125hp @ 6600rpm/106tq @ 5200 rpm D15BVTEC= 130hp @ 6800/about 110tq @ 5200 The 1st gen zc's seem to make their way over here most, which means that the d15bvtec and d16z6 are really just as good a deal, and are much newer in years. The first gen zc's are 88-91's, but the z6 ad d15bvtec are both 92-95's, and deliver the same level of power. Plus, there is not great aftermarket support for the zc, but there is for the z6 and d15bvtec. I just ditched my zc for a z6, and it feels every bit as powerful. The d15bvtec is even a little more powerful, and I can deliver you one for $550 shipped. They are direct bolt-in's, just like the other d-series engines. The only difference is cost of installation is that you have to figure out a way to activate your VTEC, like a VAFC or RPM activated switch, or something. There are inexpensive vtec controllers on EBay for about $60, which will get the job done, so there's no huge reason to go with the ZC. Also, with a ZC, you frequently get a vacuum controlled distributor, which means that you have to buy a 1g teg dist separate, which also means that you have to buy the 1g teg crank angle sensor separate. So, overall, there is no significant difference in price. My $0.02: D15BVTEC is the way to go if you want to do a D-series swap. I have installed a couple of them, and they make the CRX haul some serious A$$!

Re: Differences between 1st gen and 2nd gen CRX's
You absolutely can swap in a dohc zc, just not the d16a1 which is the dohc from the 1g tegs. As long as you keep your original smog equipment, like converter, etc. If you stay OBD0, you'll do fine. Bang for your buck is still the D15BVTEC. 15's with bolt ons and that motor is easy.
