4.2L Piston Ring Problem

Hi All. I'm considering purchase of a 2002 TB. After reading this forum, I addressed most of the problems listed here with my local dealer AND I spoke to a GM tech(different dealer) regarding his experience with repair of TB's.

The dealer did say that the tail light problem is somewhat common, but that the circuit boards were an easy fix that were a one time fix. He also said that the engines warranty was extended to 100k miles with no time limit due to a problem with a "very few" engines that had piston rings improperly installed.

Has anyone else heard of this ring problem or extended warranty?

FYI: The warranty was extended to 100,000 miles because of a problem with a cylinder liner (steel or cast iron sleeves are installed in the aluminum block) coming loose. I have the letter... I also have a knock, but haven't had them listen to it yet.

Re: 4.2L Piston Ring Problem

Was that 100k mi warranty retroactive to all TB's purchased new and used or is it only applicable to original owners?

The letter reads: "General Motors is providing owners ('owner of a 2002 Trailblazer') with special warranty coverage..." (7 years or 100,000 miles). I read that to mean that it follows the vehicle, but give them a call at 1-800-630-2438 (phone # from the letter). There is also a reimbursement option for the cylinder liner problem, if it was done prior to June 27 2003.

Re: 4.2L Piston Ring Problem

jfletch,

I was recently having problems with my 2002 TB which may be covered under the special warranty. I called the number above, but they are giving me the run around.

Any way I could get a copy? Or even a reference number from your letter?

Unhappy re: letter for warranty extention

The only thing I see on the letter that might be specific to this issue is "C03019", which is at the top right of the letter and the reimbursement form that was included. Sorry, I don't have ready access to a scanner or I would scan you a copy of the letter.
