84 camaro

Just picked up an 84 camaro(freebie) It has a v6 in it and an auto. Done engine swaps in cars before and think i can handle this, but I have a few questions. Will Ihave to replace springs shocks and sway bars? And do the v6 have the same mount location as the v8? Will It neee dnew driveshafts? Can you get some good HP out of a v6? And anything else you can think of or should I just get ride of the car and not worry? Body is in perfect sondition BTW.
PS what years are compatable? thanks all new to the camaro.

Re: 84 camaro

i had an 89 firebird v6 5 speed. i talked to a few people, and they have said that unless you have unlimited funds, it is not worth putting any money into the older models, esp the v6. if you have the extra money that you can just dump into the car, go for it. If not, dump the car and get a newer one w/ the v8 that is still worth some money. just my opinion

Re: 84 camaro

who said it was worthless to dump money into a third gen???? those are the best value for a performance car out there as far as i am concerned. well, the ones with V8's anyway but seriously, the engine swap if you can find a wrecked doner, would invove the engine, wiring harness, computer, and all the little odds and ends. you would need new engine mounts, new radiator hoses, and such. the springs are different, as are the sway bars. your best bet is to hit the junkyards, and find a V8 equipped doner car. and get all the parts you can off of it. i would say that if the body is in great shape, it is worth the effort. as far as parts compatability, any third gen, 82-92 would have bolt on parts. and if your looking at a rear differential, you can get one out of any camaro from 82 and up. but you would have to get new axles to get the rear to fit out of an 89 and up camaro/firebird. 82-88 camaros and firebirds have 26 spline axles, and 89 and up camaros have 28 spline axles. um... i think thats pretty much it from your questions. contact painless wiring for a custom harness for a V6 to V8 swap. they can probly give you one to make life much easier. as far as making power from the V6, ive never had one, so i really dont know. im sure there are performance parts available. just have to look. for starters, hit the normal hot rod stuff. port and polish the heads, K&N filter, i would say headers, but dont know if there are some available for the sixers. a high flow catback system, soup up the trans will make things interesting. B&M makes a kick ass transkit for a 700R4 rebuild with integrated shift kit. throw in a corvette 1st to 2nd servo, and that upshift will become much harder, less lag. you will not need a new driveshaft as the trans and the rear ends are the same for V8s and sixers. so you wont have to alter anything from the trans bell housing back as far as the drivetrain goes.

I have a 1984 for sale WITH a 305 V8. I will make anyone a good deal. Please see my post "1984 Camaro Z28 For sale". You could easily put any other V8 in it if you want an engine bigger than a 305.

Re: 84 camaro

you will not be happy with the performance of the v6 it will also cost you a lot of money to swap over, I have a 84 Z28 bought new 305HO 4 barrell rochester all numbers match , it is currently in the shop being painted and frame powdered coated buy you a camaro with a v8 already and it is worth the investment if you feel the need for speed!!!
