Re: camshaft position sensor problem!!

Hi,
on my '96 3.8l the sensor is fairly easily visible just inboard of the water pump, aft of the alternator. It has a hold-down screw and washer that overlaps the housing.
In my factory shop manual, it indicates that changing it is a dicey proposition as the ignition timing is derived primarily from this sensor. Alignment is critical and the manual specifies a tool to do so, in addition to properly setting the #1 cylinder to TDC prior to removal. I don't know anything of your experience, but it doesn't look like a casual weekender job to me.
Let me know if I can provide any more info. Meanwhile you might call around and get a quote on installation.

Talking Re: camshaft position sensor problem!!

I just replaced my CMP today, it took 10 minutes, 5 of those was trying to find what the kids did with my tools...(haha).
Make sure that you have checked your Crank Shaft Position sensor as well. These two can go bad at the same time (CKP is $24.99 at Auto Zone)...

CMP sensor$32.00 at Auto Zone)
If you have to replace the entire drive Camshaft assembly you are better off going to the Ford dealer ship because must have the "special" Ford tool to replace it and of course it has to be done in spec.

If it's just the sensor you need to replace read below!

The CMP sensor is mounted on a drive unit. If you are replacing only the CMP sensor, remove the screws, detach the clip, and remove it from the drive assembly. Installation is the reverse. You do not have to remove the the drive assembly from the engine. You do not need any special tools.
