Towing w 1996 Dodge Caravan

I am looking at a 1996 Dodge Caravan (not Grand Caravan) with the 3.8L V6 engine, 93,000 original miles, loaded one owner, regular main. done, no major damage or work ever done. It does not have a hitch or towing pacakage. I am wondering what all I would need to have installed for a standard box trailer 6x10 standard heighth that weighs 2500lb loaded? Will the Caravan tow this safely and without any troubles? Other than a hitch what else do you recommend? I also hear that Caravans are notorious for transmission problems, do you recommend another vehicle. I need to stay under 100,000 miles and around $5000 to $6500. As a former owner of a 84,88 and a 95 I would look for something else. Not knocking the Caravan, I got good service out of mine, a relative is still driving the 95. C'vans have had trans probs,but so have other makes. In my opinion,I do not like towing a heavy trailor with a FWD vehicle. You might look in the owners manual for towing weights-if the guy still has it. Along with the hitch,you may have to wire for brakes (depends on your trailor) I would install a trans. cooler,you may need a bigger radiator, use an equilizing hitch or air bag the rear to keep it level. Alot of this depends on where you live-flatland or mountains. If you have a local U-haul store,they can give some advice. Hope this helps.
