First off, im a camaro newb, i recently ditched the ricer and bought an 86 camaro z28 stock 305 all original parts, i'd like some opinions on the fastest yet most *reliable* and *affordable* engine to swap to. any and as much info is greatly appreciated in helping this decision.

P.S i want everyone in my neighborhood to know when i come home =)

well if you want reliable and affordable my suggestion would be to go either 327, 350, 350 to a 383, or MAYBE a 400 (or there abouts). in terms of price you're gonna have to stay primarily to a small block but also for purely street big blocks are almost a waste. you can get nice power out any of the above mentioned engines, especially the 383. also you can get any of these as crate engines and basically drop it right in. in any case you'd also be able to tune the engines for not too much money and get nice hp runnin through it.

Re: project pick an engine?

how much money you have to play with??? i would highly reccomend a GMPP fastburn 385 crate engine. you will need a new intake with the vortec bolt pattern, but aside from that, should be fun.

Re: project pick an engine?

no lie, but not exactly an affordable engine swap. best to stick with an original style small block that will bolt right in. GMPP has plenty to choose from. in fact SDPC has a vortech headed TPI small block 350 that makes 360hp and 406lbs/ft not a shabby little engine if you ask me.

Re: project pick an engine?

GMPP not to sound like a broken record. with 5k as the limit, you might look at the 330hp vortec headed crate engine, i think its less than 4k, you will need to buy an intake for it to match your application, jegs has a TBI/vortech intake that is very reasonable, and SDPC has a TPI/vortech intake, which is 399 bucks. the 330hp 350 is a ZZ4 shortblock with the vortech heads i beleive, and i dont think i have to get into the reliablity of that short block. possibly the most used crate engine of all time. and it comes from GM, with all their R&D behind it, so you know its gonna be bullet proof. with the exception of the front and rear oil pan seals, but hey, its a small block chevy after all as far as everyone knowing when you come, i think exhaust system is what you are going to have to look at. headers, hi flow cat, and a loud catback, SLP loudmouth, FLowmaster american thunder, GMMG chambered exhaust (have to bring it up again), are the most highly reccomended i have heard on the website. also magnaflow, dynomax, borla, and others are available.
