I had the vacuum switch go bad on my truck. I put a new switch & now my actuator works, but my front end does not engage.I took off the shift cable housing. Then I operated the shift shaft by hand & I can feel & hear clicking in the front end. My thoughts are that the shift fork in the front end is broken. I would sure appreciate any & all feedback. Thank You very much.

Re: 1989 S-10 4X4 front problem(please help)
Have you checked the front end is actaully not working, or are you going by the indictator light? I mean a defective switch or a burnt out bulb would be where i would look first, before tearing into the front diff on a hunch. look for the simple stuff first, but be ready to face the worst.

I pulled the actuator cable off of the axle tube & operated the shift shaft with a pair of vice grips. When I pulled the shift shaft out, which is supposed to engage the front end, the front end will make a clicking sound and feel like it is trying to engage. When you look at a parts break down, the only thing I see that it could possibly be is the shift fork. I have never been inside this style of front end before. I would like to thank everyone for their response.
