94 explorer with 4 wheel drive problems - should I buy car?
I am thinking of purchasing a 94 Explorer from a neighbor. The only thing that doesn't work on the vehicle is the 4 wheel drive. Is this a huge problem? I have been told that even if the 4 wheel drive is never used it can cause other major problems. Is this true?

Re: 94 explorer with 4 wheel drive problems - should I buy car?
The most common problem is the shift motor needs cleaning. Easy enough to do yourself or about $250 for a new one. You can drive it for ever with this problem. This vehicle also has auto locking hubs. This is the part that sticls out on the front wheels. These sometimes jam and then you drive around spinning the front differential. These can be removed if that happens and it is obvious from the noise. If these are fine then nothing in the front end will spin and even bad U joints would not be a problem.
