2002 Alero Keyless Remote

I purchased a 2002 Alero that didn't come with a remote. I found a remote on ebay for 01-03 Aleros. Got a new battery for the remote and followed instructions from another post that described how to self-program a remote for 2000 Alero (I don't know if the process is the same or not). I can't get the car to even enter the programming/diagnostic mode. The process I used is:

Hold unlock button. While holding unlock button, insert key into ignition twice, then leave it in the third time. Release unlock button. You're supposed to hear 3 chimes (which I don't get). Then you hold down lock and unlock on the remote, after which you hear 4 beeps. I get nothing like this, no sounds, no nothing.

Will this process work for an 02 Alero? Or does the dealer have to program it?

just maybe...

I got my alero from a dealer who got it from a used car company...The instruction manual said keyless entry. but the dealer said it didn't have it. I was on my trunk and lost my balance and went to catch myself on the lining of the trunk and the left lining right by the lid gave in and when I went to fix it I found a keyless entry remote inside a ziploc with the original owners manual and a cargo net...you might want to look there. its on the left right behind your tail lights.

Hi all .............I just tried to program a remote for my 2002 using the " 2000" instructions that have been mentioned.

Same result for me - no chimes ( meaning not in mode ).
I know I have Keyless as I already have a remote that works and was looking for a spare.

So ?? Does anyone know if the 2000 instructions work for the 2002 ?? If they are different.............anyone know what they may be ??

Thanks for the advice - great forum!

Doggie

For all GM remote keyless entry questions, we should be using the forum for Chevrolet-Nonspecific. The guys that answer the questions there seem to have all the official documents from GM on each year, brand and model of car. On my 2001 Alero, they said that the dealer had to access the programming mode with a GM Tech I or Tech II scanner. So unless I can find a buddy who happens to have one (very expensive!), I will be going to dealer. If I remember correctly, they also said that all Aleros (99+) have to be programmed by dealer. I have searched the web extensively and have not come up with any "secret" way to put it in programming mode. By the way, if you call an Olds dealer and give them your VIN, they can tell you if it came with RKE. Also look in the trunk on the spare tire cover at the label of all the RPO codes, and if AU0 (zero) is there, you have RKE.
