need subwoofer help

i've got a single cab s-10. im putting a 10w6v2 in it. i want to go with a ported box. i've had great success with them in the past. does anyone have any experience with them in a single cab truck??

the easiest way i got my system in was with two individual 10" truck boxes (around 80 dollars from any audio store) and then i placed the amps under the seat

i now got two del sol seats in the truck with a custom fiberglass box in the center with my subs mounted on top (just an idea)

i NEVER use pre fab boxes. especially not with a high quality woofer like the w6. or any jl component for that matter. too small or too large a box will result in poor performance and possible woofer damage. i always build my own boxes. they are MUCH cheaper too. i built a ported box for a JL 15w3. it took less than a full sheet of 3/4 mdf @ 20 bucks a sheet. compare that to what it would cost for a quality prefab ported enclosure....150+. I aint payin it. the box is built to exact JL spec. the volume is on target, the port is tuned to the frequency that i desired. roughly 31.5 - 32 Hz. and it kicks @$$ same way with the ported box i built for a 12w3. that one 12w3 hit just as hard as 2 15w3's in a sealed box. as long as you are handy with a saw, it is not that complicated or time consuming to build the box. you are looking at maybe 8 hours total, depending on the in depth design of the box. 2 to 3 hours, maybe less, to design the box and do the calculations and the rest is build time. i went with a sealed box. its a wedge design and i downfired the woofer. that eliminated the pesky seat rattle i had from the previous woofer firing into the seat back. not sure if i want to try and do a ported box next or not. i've got to do some measuring to see if it will fit. thanx for the input tho

I would disagree.Prefabs are much cheaper than building your own.Unless your looking in the wrong place.Take for an example,e-bay.You can get a box to your door for 50.00.Now if you build your own you would have 20.00 in a sheet of MDF,7.00 in a tube of adhesive,3.00 for a tube of chaulking,5.00 in a quick connect terminal,20.00 in carpet.Don't forget about the time running around to get the stuff and to actually build the box.Prefabs come in all sizes,so that makes it nice.

dang dude. where do you live? 7 bucks for adhesive. i use liquid nails at about 3 bucks a tube. wal mart brand caulk for 98 cents. i dont use terminals. i drill a hole just big enough for wire and seal it with silicone. and as for carpet that just depends on your preference. i've had good success painting my boxes as well as using vinyl. the vinyl i buy is about 4 bucks a yard. most of my boxes take no more than 2 yards.

$3 adhesive
$1 caulk
$12 vinyl (lets say it takes 3 yards)
$4 3M spray adhesive

$40 grand total. for a custom built box that is built to perform with the specs of the speaker. much better look and sound quality. it really just depends on the person. but if you take a woofer that needs .62 cu ft air space at optimum power range and throw it in a pre fab that is 1 cu ft. you are not only wasting space, you are also wasting a good woofer. you aren't maximizing its potential

Cmon man.You know as well as me that subs have a universal range.For example,a sub needs a box at least .25 cubes,but no more than 1.0 cube.With a little bit of math you can find a prefab within these measurements.Yes,different measurements give different results.Unless your going for SPL or want a custom fit box,I don't see the need for the hassle.What would be easier?Getting a prefab and dropping your sub in it or getting the MDF,cutting it,screw and(or)glue it,chaulk it,spray adhesive it,cover it and you saved a couple bucks by doing it.The money issue isn't even a concern verses the ease of a prefab.I've done both.All I'm am saying is that a prefab is easier and quicker.And if you want to hit that certain freq.,build one.If building one you should use a terminal,just drilling a hole.........That's a butcher job.

yes subs do have a flexible range for air space. but every manufacturer has a recommended or optimum volume for maximum performance. and if you really care about how your system sounds and you want the most out of it, you will build your own, or have a box built instead of going with prefab. i am not necessarily referring to sealed boxes. my main focus was on the ported enclosures. ported enclosures that are built correctly are quite expensive. and as far as prefab goes. if you got cheap equipment, go for it. but i deal with high end stuff jlw6's and jbl GTi competition serious woofers. and the particle board crap they use in 90% of pre fabs just wont hold up in the long run to the punishment that they are going to receive. hell a buddy of mine has some kenwood tornado cones in a prefab box and they blew the divider out of place. And the terminal thing. its not a butcher job to just drill a hole and seal it up. the first person who pulls my box out of its hole just to look at where the speaker wire comes out and says this box is crappy, look, you didn't even use terminals, can go hump a goat for all i care. i got 50 bucks says my box and set up will out perform his high class unit with the terminals. im function over form. yes looks do matter. and i can build a cover a box that fits perfectly in the space i have, and looks better that what i can buy at the store for the same price if not significantly less. so you can keep your prefab particle board boxes.

I dont really know much about trucks and stereos, and I got a '91 S-10 single cab, and i have no idea how I could put a sub in there. I got benchseats, and very little room behind them. Any of you got any ideas? Or even pics of some ideas. It would be a real help, im lost.
