Greetings and Happy New Year
Hello everyone,
I've been lurking around for a little while and now I need help. Actually, I'm trying to make up my mind between purchasing 2 different cars. The slightly more affordable Mazda Protege ES or for 3k more, a Subaru Impreza TS. I've been waying the pros and cons for both and am still uncertain. Does anyone believe that one of these 2 cars is more reliable that the other. More comfortable than the other. Both of them are the 2002 models. Any suggestions, ideas to think about, worries ... would be appreciated. I'm not trying to start a debate, but to get a little help. BTW, I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and winter driving is an issue. Thanks, Rich |

Well I would take the Impreza. I like that car way more. Subarus have gone great in the snow and wet better than anything I've been around I think. So for your winterproblem the WRX wins. I don't know if you want to make it fast are not. But if you do it's a nice car to do. My personaly I say WRX. But I like my VW too.

The mazda proteges are one of the best handling cars stock out of the box for an econo car. Mazda has a better reputation for quality then Subaru, but they have been closing the gap recently. Both cars are used in the Canadian rally championship so they have proven their ability in winter conditions. Remember AWD only gets you deeper in to the snow bank. Cost of maintenance will be lower on the Mazda as it does not have the AWD system that does need extra care. And the Mazda will get you better fuel economy(esp in city driving). Subaru does have the advantage of the boxer engine which can be a very long lasting engine.
Hope that helps |

Get an Infiniti G20! *lol* j/k
I personally would have a tough choice in that decision, too... PA, USA also has snow issues to deal with, but simply speaking from what I have seen far more often on the roads: It would be hands-down Mazda... On the "faster" hand, the Subaru might be more fun. It all depends on how much you want to put into it. If you like tinkering around with extras, go for the Mazda so that you can afford things like new wheels or other things.... Good luck on whatever decision you make!

Well, I decided. I've gone for the Mazda Protege and should be picking it up on Friday. I've chose the 5 speed E.S. model with extra rims and winter tires, a car starter and kill switch, and aircondition thrown in. It ended up being the last car bought in 2001. The cost was $20 000 can. plus tax. The subaru couldn't really compare to it in cost and I could not justify the extra expense.
Also, from what I could tell, the trunk space was actually larger in the mazda than the subaru with its' tarp pulled over. Thanks for everyones help. Happy New Years Richard |
