Unhappy Engine knocking/pinging

Hey guys (i hope we're all guys lol), I own a 98 Eclipse GSX, it's only got about 56,000 miles on it, about few weeks ago I started hearing a knocking sound in the engine. I haven't mod the engine in anyway expect for adding some rims on it. So my question is: What can i do to get rid of this awful sound?

Re: Engine knocking/pinging

I think everyone will tell you that you are too vague to diagnose anything particular.. so all I can tell you is that a tick is the valvetrain (my lifters tick when i start cold for about 5 minutes) and if it's something like a rod, you will be able to tell or ask any semi-knowledgable technician.
The difference between the two is night and day, which one of those is it?

Unless I missed some crucial information, there is no way to really tell what your particular noise is, you can locate it to a general area maybe.. but only a mechanic looking at it can tell you exactly what it is.

Re: Engine knocking/pinging

when does the knocking occur? while driving? idling? starting cold?

Re: Engine knocking/pinging

The car still makes that sound even if it's warmed. Then some times it stops, for example like i'm on the road going above the 3,000 RPM the sound would disappare, but then when the engine is running it makes it... Do you think it's a rod knock? and how much would I expect to pay to get it repaired?

Re: Engine knocking/pinging

don't assume it's anyrthing major until you know for sure, like I said you will probably have to have someone look at it to pinpoint the problem.

Re: Engine knocking/pinging

yea if im getting what your saying, i got the same problem. whenever i have my car in gear and pressing on the gas, it gives a small knocking sound. and when i let go of the gas, and its still in gear, every once in a while it'll knock and go away, and i can feel the shifter vibrate with the knock. i haven't figured out what it is, but i read somewhere that it could be due to low octane fuel. i'm gonna drive my car for the next week with the highest that i can put, and see how it goes. if that's what's happening to you, try doing the same. for me, if it doesn't go away, then ima go have it looked at.

Re: Engine knocking/pinging

lol that's funny about the rims... anyways, should I take the car the to dealer and have them check out the car? and what do you mean by changing the octane? you mean the grade of the fuel? well i'm using premium (92).

Re: Re: Engine knocking/pinging

ya, thats octane. higher octane means higher ignition temp. with forced induction, higher pressure = higher temperature. lower ignition temp = higher chance of detonation when high pressure is introduced[knock]. basicaly. so always use the highest possible. and unless it magically dissapears then you should take it to somebody. preferably a DSM specialist, not just anyone. even the dealer may not have the experience needed to treat our engines. if it were me that's what i would do. a got a bit of knowledge, but when it comes down to it, there is always somebody else that knows A LOT more...

Re: Engine knocking/pinging

I dont think any audible knocking is CW, there would be other signs before then, like the car not running because the crank sensor is bajaxed. But you never know. Rod knock is not impossible, but like everyone said there is no way to do this over the internet. And anyone with a turbo DSM not running the highest octane in your area, you're on crack.
