Hi my name is Dietrich and I am from Ohio. I have always been around VW's because my dad loves the old D Jettas. I just got a 95 Jetta GL with the 2.0L 5 speed. I love it!! I have a few questions though. What the heck is the noise like a pump in the back driver side fender when I lock or unlock the driver door???? Also how fast should the heat guage go up?? Mine takes forever. I think it could be a stuck open thermostat.

Re: MY jetta ?'s
Well the noise is just your locks locking I suppose... My 97 GLX Jetta does the same thing. I'm not sure on your heat gauge.

As for the temp gauge, I would change the thermostat, they arent very expensive, and its a good place to start.

"When in doubt swap it out."
Yes.. that sound is right guys.. all Jetta III's make that sound. It is kinda fun.
Most older VW heat gauges are slow raising... but i agree with that last guy... doesn't hurt to just change anything you have question of, specially when it is cheat. "When in doubt swap it out." |

Thermostat
My door locks on my 97 Jetta GLS sound the same way. If you change your thermostat have fun. I'm not sure about a 95 Jetta but on mine the thermostat is located in the water pump under the car. I had to take the power steering pump loose and let it hang down. Then you take the water hose clip off and the thermostat is in the housing that the hose attatches to. My radiator does not have a drain plug or a filler cap. When you fill the cooling system back up, fill it through the top radiator hose. Make sure that you don't have air in the system or the coolant will not circulate.

Re: MY jetta ?'s
this thread gave me some piece of mind. the locks on my 2000 jetta make a similar "clothes washer spin cycle" kind of sound whenever i hit the switch. just bought the car last week and wasnt sure if this was normal if they were dying....

locks/warm up
I have a 97 also. have many mods to my car. that noise you hear in the back is the trunk locking with a motor alo9ng with all the other locks,, thats normal.. definetally would change the t-stat.. is you have a 2.0L you may as well do the water pump with the t-stat.. its a PAIN IN THE ASS if you have A/C.. mine doesnt and is a whole lot easier!!! as with the last response make sure there is no air in the cooling system because it may take forever to burp the system with the coolant bottle set up..any other questions ?? get with me

I hope that you can help me. I have flushed the coolant out of the car (95 Jetta 2.0L manual with a/c) and I think that all of it is out. When I tried to replanish it it would fit less then a liter (1L). I would run the engine with the heat full blast and the coolant wouldn't move. I have ran the engine until it came to 230F but the fan never came on. It would just build up the pressure in the hoses. please help !!! (system worked without problems before) |

Re: MY jetta ?'s
My 95 jetta 2.0 pushes oil out of the housing above the oil filter. I suspect a blown head gasket, but has anyone seen this symptom before?

Re: coolant system trouble ???????????
Could it be that your thermo switch has finally died and is not telling the fan to turn on? How did you drain the radiator? You didn't happen to unplug the thermo switch, unscrew it and drain that way, and then forget to plug the blade terminals back in did you?

Re: MY jetta ?'s
for the mk4 cars, (1999.5 and up) the whirring noise = the fuel pump pressurizing
as for the mk3 cars, seems like its the locks? (i dont have a mk3 sorry..) |
