Re: Engine speed swinging during Idling

With engine cold, insert key into ignition and turn to "on" position(do not start), wait at least 30 seconds, turn back to "off" position, wait at least 30 seconds, then remove key. After doing this, start it and see if it's still doing it. Unless you are a currently trained auto tech, I would not recommend trying to adjust anything by hand. The days of tuning our own cars are about over. Most basic engine functions are set or adjusted through a scan tool.

Re: Engine speed swinging during Idling

Could it be possibly related to the EGR valve? or maybe the PCV? Both can cause rough idling if they are open.

Could be any number of things relating to a dirty intake area. A can of throttle body cleaner and a toothbrush around the intake valve area can be an inexpensive first step too. Just be sure to get the throttle body cleaner for FI cars and not carb cleaner. Carburetor cleaner is flammable which leads to explosive backfires and shredded air boxes (not on my Aurora thank goodness). Make sure you clean off the back of the butterfly valve plate as well as the front. The idle air control valve is right in there too- there is another thread dealing spcifically with trying to clean it and not ruining it. Running anything other than premium fuel seems to lead to a lot of carbon buildup.

Good luck.

Re: Engine speed swinging during Idling

On my last car (which was an old cutlass), I had the same problem. I just fixed it the cheater way. I just raised the idle by shortening the cable that went to the idler. I know that wasn't the right way to fix it. The right way would have been to figure out what was causing the idle to change. But it was a quick fix and it worked. It just idled at about 500 rpms higher than what it did otherwise.

Re: Re: Engine speed swinging during Idling

I just described the idle learn procedure for recalibrating the computer. This was not intended to be done every time you start it. I should have clarified that.
