Mine does the same thing...it is your O"2 sensor...it needs to be replaced...and that is going to be about $200 so get ready for that...mine comes on after i go about sixty.

Re: I Need Help With My 95 Grand-am Gt
My Check Engine light comes on when I go into overdrive and then drop back out.
I've already replaced the 02 sensor, so what else could it be? |

No offense, but 95_GRANDAM_GT, you cant just callout the O2 for replacement when the system monitors about 10 different sensors (give or take) The ECM is trying to tell you something and you have to extract the codes to diagnose properly. If you start replacing components without knowing what is wrong, you might as well spend the money $$$$$, and replace them all, that is basically what your doing. You can take your car to most parts stores, and they will scan for free in hopes of selling you the defective part. You can make your own determination after you get the codes, and can also post here again to get some help if you need. There is a multitude of things that would make it do this, If its not staying in overdrive (quote"dropping back out"), I would check the tranny fluid level first and service with new filter if it hasnt been done in awhile. TCC could be bad (would set off a code) plugs/wires could be bad (could set off O2 code) EGR could be getting clogged (could set off code) etc. Good Luck!

Also, your check engine light will come on and STAY on when you have a loose gas cap. It's how the manufacturers and dealerships make money! It stays on until you get the light reset to make sure that the engine is still not leaking emissions. If you would like to reset it..here are two ways:
Disconnect the batter and let it sit over night....this was the long process. The quicker process is: Inside the engine compartment fuse box are 12 fuses. 6 big ones, 6 tiny ones like the ones in the driverside fuse box. 1. Turn The ignition to "ON" without starting the car. 2.Pull the "PCM BAT" fuse usually 10a and it's red but might be different. When you do this the headlights should come on, just ignore it. 3. Pull the "IGN MOD" or "PCM IGN" fuse which is usually 20a and it's yellow, but again, may be different. It will definitly be the only fuse you have there with the smaller ones that has IGN in the name. When you do this you should here a small clicking noise that comes from inside the engine. 4. Wait about 5-10 seconds 5. Re-instert the "20a" fuse to the correct slot. The Fuel Injedction system should kick in and will fill up with fuel just as it does when the car is on, but this time the car will not be on. 6. Re-insert the "10a" fuse to the correct slot. You should here another click with the engine. 7. Replace the cover to the fuse box, and turn the ignition switch to the off position. 8. Start the engine. (Your check engine light should be off now) If the light stay's off for more than a few days or so, then it means that it was more than likely that you had a loose gas cap at one point! If it comes back on, then get the diagnostics ran on the car which you can get done for free at almost any Advanced Auto or AutoZone. |

Re: I Need Help With My 95 Grand-am Gt
I have a 95 Grand Am and that same problem happened to me. I took it in to a dealer to have them hook it up to a machine and they found out that the EGR valve had carbon build up. It cost me under $100.00 to fix it.
