Upgrading headlight bulbs

Unless you have Euro headlights on your 86-94 124, and have added relays to your headlights, do not use higher wattage bulbs in your o.e. headlights. It's no secret that the o.e. headlights provide very poor light output, but these headlights were mandated by the head of the D.O.T. in the 80's to match the American car headlights. That's why there is the plastic headlight surround on these 124's. Everywhere else in the world, the Mercedes 124 body came with all glass headlights (we call them "Euros") which had different reflectors and greater light output. Euro headlights will accept H4 bulbs that are 100 watt without modification (80/100). To use higher wattage requires adding relays to the headlights sothey appear white instead of yellowy white. P.
