Re: oil leak prob
lol, if its a small block chevy its gonna leak oil
usualaly around the front and rear mains, its usually normal, a little sweating of oil, picking up dirt and such is nothing to worry about, if there are drops of oil on the pan and its making a mess, you probly have to have a new oil pan seal put in.

LT1's are notorious for leaking around the rear of the intake manifold. This is because the front and rear of the intake manifold use liquid gaskets. They have a strange shape, so they don't make a solid gasket for it.
Word to the wise, You may be able to reduce, if not fix the leak by simply torqueing down your intake manifold bolts to spec. I didn't think of that, and had everything but the bolts removed when I discoverd that the back 2 were only finger tight... I probably could have just torqued them down, but I redid the gaskets and seals since I was already so close. It is something to check on before scheduling time to replace the gaskets and sealant though...

Re: oil leak prob
well, actually, most small block chevy intakes only have them along the cylender heads, the liquid sealer is called RTV, its a silcone sealer, but if not done perfectly it is notorious for leaking. that is a good point though, forgot about the rear intake. good call hot red. however i would suggest that if it is leaking there, dont just retorque, go ahead and get the intake done. once it starts, its just going to get worse. best to fix it now. and fix it right.

Re: oil leak prob
I have a 3800 series II v6 that i just bought. Very clean on the engine except one little puddle of oil on the manifold under the coil packs. I was wondering if anyone else has seen this problem and if torqueing the bolts down would probally fix this? Also if anyone has those specs for the manifold bolts please let me know.

Another note.. If there are bolts in it, and its leaking (applies to just about everything with a gasket) It needs a new gasket.. Re-torqueing is a make-shift solution, and it wont last long.. |

the oil leak is behind the intake manifold on the passenger side. the reason for this is the egr pipe heating up from exhaust gases and warping the manifold. i hate to be the bearer of basd news but this is not a simple fix. i had to do this on my 97 lt1 because it already cost me an 800$ clutch. boy was i piiiissseeedd!!
http://www.bfranker.badz28.com/fbody/intakefix.htm
but heres a link to how to fix it with great picts. but the part with the sanding just ignore that its not required nor benificial. |

After a closer inspection of the leak I realized it was water / antifreeze not actually oil.

You think it is just a intake manifold gasket or larger problem. I have heard that GM had a bad run of intake gaskets in 1996. Wondering if this just might be one of them. |
