Question Check Engine Light Problem 99 legacy wgn

I have nearly 75,000 miles on my 1999 Legacy Brighton Wagon, and just recently, the check engine light has started to go on and off. I don't think it's a problem with sealing my gas cap after filling up, because I'm careful to do that correctly, and the problem persists.

I've gone through several cycles now where the light will click on on my drive home from work when I accellerate above 55 mph going up a slight hill. The light will then stay on - a steady, not blinking light - for about 5 days and then go off again for approx. another five days.

I understand this light is an emissions sensor and the Dealer said he wasn't sure whether the light or the emissions system is malfunctioning, but it will cost me over $100 for a diagnostic.

Should I pay the $100 + to see if something's wrong with my emissions system - or is this a common electrical glitch for this car?

Thanks for your help.

Hi there........

Get the check done - spending $100 could save you spending thousands especialy with Subaru's. It could be your knock sensor needs to be replaced (Approx $30 American) or your cam belt (Approx $70American labour incl) But it can also mean alot of other things. the reason I say this is the amount of miles you have on it. As far as it sensoring your emisions, who in the hell told you that!? I am taking a stab atthe prices here as I am from NZ and your dollar kicks ours to the curb so dont go quoting this to your mechanic cause I may be off track but this should not be too far out of the ball park.

Cheers...........D

Please check your oxygen sensor and the wires,
probably located on the passenger's side at the back of the engine.

For out 99 Outback, it was the Oxygen sensor. Cheap and easy fix.

Dion is an IDIOT and should stop speaking. Of course the check engine light is an indicator for an emissions system malfunction. Spend the money for a proper diagnosis. Going to Pep Boys or Autozone will only give you a trouble code that is usually worthless without the training to inspect and diagnose the affected system.
