99' Aurora question

Hi all,

I'm new and had a question. My 99' (45,000 miles) seems to be losing some of it's "get up and go" over the past couple of months. The only thing that I have done since I've gotten it is replaced the air filter with an K&N, and put in some platinum +4 spark plugs. It seems as though I need to give it more gas to get it to go, and the gas peddle seems to be very loose. As soon as I get the $$$, I'm going to replace all the spark plug wires, and possibly replace the fuel filter as well. Other than that, the only advise I've gotten was to run some fuel injector cleaner next time I fill up.....and I've only used premium fuel.

Any ideas? I'm far from any mechanic....so I'm lost

At 45,000 miles Id say your plugs and wires were fine unless you had a miss. GM uses platnium tip plugs that are good to 100,000 miles so unless you do have a miss Id stay away from installing new wires unless you really need it. What kind of K&N did you install? Drop in or a whole intake change? Ive read were changing the intake while giving more top end power really robs the Aurora on the low end.

Thanks for the replay....all I did was install a drop in, nothing more. Thanks for the advise though -- I'll wait on changing out the wires....any other ideas? Maybe fuel filter?

If its still the original fuel filter I would change it. I personally change my fuel filters every 15,000 miles since they cost so little and can be changed in 5 min. Ive heard that a clogged fuel filter can lead to a fuel pump failure and seeing how much that cost I see it as cheap insurance.

Don't screw around with non-Delco plugs and wires, you'll be sorry.

I thought about going with the plat 4 plugs then got to reading about plugs found out that a single spark will burn fuel more efficiently than 4 thats what they say I went with the ac delco runs great and with 28 to 30 mpg on the hwy who can complain.

wow....thanks for the great info. Wish I would have known before I spent the $$$ for the plat 4 plugs. I'll be sure to pass the info on to my friends as well. I'll change out the fuel filter and hopefully that takes care of my issues. Thanks again to all who replied....it's greatly appreciated.

Good to see that you are getting as good of mileage out of your Aurora as I am. When I first purchased it last summer I drove it to my parents house in WV. Must have been 90-95 degrees the whole way so the a/c was on the whole way and I still got 27-28 MPG. In November we went to visit again and since I didnt have to use my a/c the mileage jumped to 29mpg. I couldnt believe the mileage Ive been getting on the highway with this car. What do you get in city? If I drive a whole tank in the city I only get 18-19mpg, not nearly as good as on the highway but still not to shabby!

Holy cow....I'm only getting 19-21 on the highway....maybe I should consider changing my plugs back! Specially with the Gas Prices rising as they have the past couple of days.

One more question since I've gotten different responses from different places --- when do you guys recommend changing the tranny fluid? I've been told to wait till the computer in the car says it's life is about up, and I've also heard every 35k miles as well. What are your thoughts?

My economy numbers match BKVic's. AC Delco Professional Platinum plugs run about $6.50 each, but worth it! 35k mi. is about right, I wouldn't go more than that. It's too easy and cheap to put off and suffer the consequences. Fram filter kit is $15, and save $ by buying ATF in the 1 gallon jugs. The trans fluid life monitor on the DIC does not work, ignore it. The oil life sensor is fairly accurate though.

19-21?? I get that in town, and usually 27-29 hwy @ 70mph..
The only time mine ever dropped that low was a run from Miami to orlando when i was running over 100 the whole way.and i still was getting over 20........

my dic reads 20.8 around town average would probibly get a little better if I kept my foot out of it. The last trip the wife and I took to south GA a 300 mile round trip cruise control set 70 to 80 average was 30.9 when we got home 93 octane new plugs wires and oil great milage for a car of this weight.
