95 escort head gasket problem

Hi,
I have been told I have a head gasket problem by a dye test done where the green fluid turned yellow. Accurate diagnosis? No goop in oil yet. I was told different things by different mechanics. My questions:

How long can I drive this without further damage? As far as I know there is no overheating.

Is it worth replacing the head? What about a new engine. Being quoted 3 grand for new engine. I would pay someone to do work.

Also what kind of warranty? I was told 4000 miles on head gasket..that seemed lame.

I am wondering if maybe a cooling system problem altogether. In 1999, I replaced heater core, radiator leaking in 2002 and now this in 2004...coincidence. I am not mecanical, but this seems odd.

Any other words of wisdom and encouragement. Not in the market for a new car and really like the escort for price, mileage, insurance, space etc.

I had a similar issue w/ a 94 Cavalier. It never overheated, but one day I'm cruising down the highway then all the sudden it began to overheat and white smoke billowing from my tail pipe, ended up costing me around $1100 to get it repaired. It may be cheaper to get it replaced than to get a whole new engine.

I would wonder about the head gasket diagnosis, get someone you know to do a compression test, and a radiator pressure test, that should help.
Also the head gasket, doesn't require the purchase of a new head, gaskets are cheap but it is a fair amount of labor, and things like the timing belt should be done while your in there as well, it will just save you from more aggrivation later on.How many miles on this beast ?

The car has 136k on it. Being female, I just want to trust that I am not getting a raw deal. I took it in yesterday again, and they did the dye test, agreeing it was a gasket problem. So, I suppose I will take it in next week. How do I know it is really a cracked head (if it is indeed that) when they have the vehicle in their possession? I am also trying drive minimally until I can get it in and am keeping an eye on the fluid and temp gauge.
