car died on the highway

i have a 89 se, and have been having problems with the power steering. I would get any at all unless i gave it enough gas to get the rpms up to 3 or 4, at which point i could turn alot better. The PS pump is only 3 months old. Then yesterday I noticed my battery was low and while driving down the highway it eventually just died from lack of juice. Im thinking that the serpentine belt is to blame, but it looks fine and doesnt make any squealing. Then again the car has 118k miles and Im not sure the belts ever been replaced. How can I check to see if its just loose or do I need a new one? I dont know exactly what to look for on the belt to see if its bad. Also whats the cost for these things? autozones website doesnt have em.. Thanks alot.

Re: car died on the highway

I'd guess you have a power steering fluid leak or the new pump is defective. Belt slippage would likely happen more in the higher rpms than in the lower rpms (I'd think) so I'd rule that out as the cause of your power steering loss.
As far as your battery running out of juice and dying, I'd think either the battery is no longer taking a charge or your alternator is no longer providing a charge to refresh the battery. If you go to autozone they will probably test both for you and you can solve that issue.
