Starting Problems

I have a 1983 S-10 with a 2.8L V6. Recently I have had some troubles starting it. I've already changed starters. I went from the original stock to a 305 stock starter. It started great for a week and then it wouldn't start. I don't think it's the starter or the solenoid because I can bypass the switch and start it. Every once in a while it will start with the key but the rest of the time I have to bypass the ignition switch. I have been told that it could be either my relay or that my park and neutral switches are not making contact. Could someone please tell me which of these two it most likely is or if it's something else. Thanks.

start problem

had the same problem as you , new starter , start maybe 50 times then would go in streaks where it would have to be by passed, the old open hood and use screw driver trick. decided it had to be the ignition switch itself. That was the problem, just disconnected it, cleaned corroded terminals and it starts everytime now. good luck.

ignition switch

Batguy, you just romove a couple of plugs and two bolts that hold your steering column in place. You'll find it sitting on top of your steering column under the dash. I was having to get out intermittently every so often and arc my solenoid with a screw driver because the key would not start it. I removed the ignition switch i just mentioned and found some of the connectors to be corroided, cleaned them up with sand paper and it's like new.
Also, i will warn you I have replaced 4 fuel pumps in this vehicle, they tend to go out. I know gas is out of sight right now , but keep atleast 1/4 tank of gas , this will keep the pump cool, especially in summer months.
Hope this helps!!!!!
