1989 chevy astro--won't start, black smoke in tail pipe, map sensor?

my 1989 chevy astro will turn over but it cuts off as soon as I try to put it in gear, rigt as i was trying to start it, it had black smoke coming out of tailpipe, i stuck a paper clip in the control thing and it gave me a code, i looked it up and it was the map sensor, does this sound right according to whats happening to the van. service engine light is on

It could be the MAP sensor, or the EGR valve. How many miles are on the van? We used to own an 89 and it had that issue, but liberally using starting fluid helped it. You might have issues with the CFI too.
