It should be in front of the right rear wheel. More or less under the rear passenger seat on the right side. They can get pretty rusty and ygly so go gently and you shouldnt have any trouble. Make sure you pull the fuse for the fuel pump and turn the car "on" beore cracking any lines. Good luck Mike.

I forgot to mention that your symptoms sound like a cracked ignition module (coil). This has been a problem with these cars. It can be fixed with epoxy or replacing the part for quite a lot of $. Mike.

That will be where the plug wires go into. The opposite ends to the plugs. Look for it on the right side of the engine when facing it from the front of car. It's a black square piece. If you unplug the wires, be sure to make note which goes where before. Keep snowboarding Greg....but dont catch an edge. Mike. BTW, We've had an unbelievable amount of snow this year...it's wicked.

VW extended the coil coverage to 70K on the later models, but it probably won't help you with a '96.

Coil packs
The VR6 coil packs of this era are notorious for cracks and arcing. In Canada, the dealer will charge you roughly $700 to replace them, and of course the wires, and plugs. I have found a short term solution that is practically free, but very effective in my case. About every 3 months, I inspect the boots at the coil, and clean. Then, I place a small amount of dielectric grease inside the boot, and rub it in. I also clean the coil exterior as much as I can. Road salt can contribute to making a good path for the errant spark when the engine is damp. This method usually prevents the spark from jumping and causing a miss on startup. Your results may not be as successful, but it's worth the few minutes it takes. Think of it as regular maintenance, just like checking the oil or windshield washer fluid.
