Question In dash decks?

Who's swapped out their factory units for an aftermarket in dash? Did it fit well, or did you have to "adjust " anything? What would you recommend for fit/quality/sound?

Re: In dash decks?

I swapped out my stereo with an MP3 player. The installation was the easiest I have ever done. I bought a trim install package (after market head units are smaller than OEM), a antenna adapter (OEM plug is smaller than aftermarket) and a wiring harness kit. The wiring harness kit was easy to do. You take the aftermarket harness and splice it to the harness kit then everything just plugs in.

I've had two aftermarket radios installed in my truck. My first was an Alpine and my most recent one is a Kenwood MP3. I didn't do the install, but everything fit fine. They make harness plates specifically designed for radios to fit.

For quality and sound, you usually get what you pay for. My personal favorites, are Kenwood, Alpine, Clarion, and Pioneer. But everyone has different opinions, likes and dislikes.

Re: In dash decks?

eclipse make some awsome decks. they also have a lock out feature that only allows the owner or someone with the lock out disk to reactivate the unit if it is removed from the vehicle, stollen, or looses power for some reason. this is just an option that can be activated by owner, dosent have to be.

Re: In dash decks?

Does anyone have a unit dvd/flip out screen. Alpine and Kenwood seem to make units w/ the most options.

Re: In dash decks?

I have a 1996 Sierra. I mounted a sony deck temporarily until I had the time to mount My pioneer. Both decks fit fine. Mine 1996 is a 4X4 so I took the extra time to get a solid back strap but other than that effort it works great. It was a chore to find a mounting plate that looks good, like a factory install and not stick out and cover the heater controls. Happy to say they can be found! Seems like most decks will fit without a problem and with a little custom work for a back strap!

Re: In dash decks?

i got a 2000 and it was the easiest radio i have installed. thats what i love about these trucks it is easy to take the dash apart. that makes it so much easier when you are wiring stuff. dont have to spend all day ripping your dash apart

My brother and myself just installed a Alpine Iva-C801 Mobile Multimedia Station on my 2004 ext Silverado. Also installed my Playstation 2. We just needed the trim for the Alpine head unit. Fits and works perfect. Next week i want to install 2 5.6 or 6 inch headrest monitors. Haven't seen to many ext cabs with headrest monitors.

This unit has a built in cd player, it has 2 auxiliary a/v inputs which you could connect a video game source and seperate dvd player as well. Its also navagation ready but i never installed it. And i bought a seperate tv tuner so i could watch the local channels. I like new alpine Iva-D900 it has a build in Cd Dvd player. What type of unit are you thinking about getting? I know Panasonic makes some pretty good units.

Re: In dash decks?

I'm looking for a flip out screen w/ cd, dvd, am/fm,, tv, and at least 1 av input. Kenwwod, alpine(like yours), and clarion all seem to be good units, but I'd need some advice 1st on which to pick. I'll check into panasonic as well, thanks.
