Newbie Questions

I was wondering if there were automatic sunroofs on 3000GTs? I've only seen a flip up sun roof and in order for you to open it, you have to turn this one thing to flip it up. The roof could come off if you took the whole glass off but are there any that's all automatic? This is on a 94 3000GT SL.

I was also wondering what is the difference between an intake, and an intake system? Is an intake just the pipe and the intake system the pipe and the air filter? How much hp would the intake system give you? And what is a downpipe? I read it in a couple messages but don't really know what they are!?!

One last thing, I was wondering how much should I expect to pay to recondition/refurbish the leather interior? The leather seats are cracking and stuff and even if it was lotioned, it still cracked. So do you guys know about how much it would probably cost to fix? Thanks.

I'm thinking there are automatic sunroofs for the 3kgt.

An intake system is generally the combination of the air filter and intake pipe. On a naturally aspirated car, you can expect about 4-8 horses. On a turbocharged car you will get about 2-3bhp.

A downpipe is the thing before the catalytic converter. Typically people upgrade it because of the angle of the pipe, which causes restriction in exhaust flow.

Buying new racing seats will cost 600 bucks. New leather seats a little more. Dunno about refurbishing.

Re: Sunroof Question

Hey Ace, thanks for the response. I was wondering though....what's "bhp," or did you mean hp? Also, an intake system would probably be the first modification done to a 3000GT, right? How do you know which size pipe and air filter you should get? Because I read something about different sizes with different effects or something. And what would it do to the car in terms of gas usage, exhaust sound, and performance (if you know!?!)? Thanks again.

91-94 had moonroofs that are manual and can be removed
95-99 had sunroofs that are automatic, smaller, and can not be removed

I love my moonroof, 94 the best year ever(not counting the spyders)

BHP is "Brake Application Horspower", which is the horsepower input applied to the compressor shaft.

Typically, the size of your stock intake pipe is adequate, it's the filter that you should worry about. Most people get conical filters from K&N, but I find that *any* type of high flow filter is better than the stock air filter box. And because you're changing the air filter, you need a new intake pipe to connect it to. Use a mandrel bent pipe similar in shape to your stock pipe.

Aftermarket air filters can be heard, it has no effect on exhaust sound. You'll hear it sucking in air quietly. It will decrease gas mileage (ever so slightly) and increase performance (ever so slightly). The numbers I gave for hp gain up there were pretty generous.

And yes, usually the first modifications people do are: intake, exhaust, header (i/h/e). But I recommend doing a little tuneup before any mods: an oil change, new spark plugs, spark plug wires, and a coolant system flush, among others.

Good luck, man.
