Cam Shaft?

Hello everybody, I'm new to this board! I had no idea that this many people owned the same car I do.

Anyway, I've been going through a lot of the old posts, and was reading about an old post about cam shafts. People have been mentioning a lot of these JWT S3 cams, and have given them much praise! I am very interested in purchasing a set of those, but had some questions that maybe one of you geniuses can help me out with. What are the set backs to getting these cams? I've talked to a couple people about cams in general, does it really make that much more engine noise? Will the car stall for no reason, with my manual tranny?

Hopefully somebody can answer my silly questions!

Hey there Adrian...

We're a small group, but growing! Welcome, theres tons of helpful people here.

About the cams, I dont think the idle will be that rough. I dont believe the cams are that extreme or that they will rev your engine up and down a lot during idle. Jason Steeves (G20.net) would know for sure as he's got them installed on his 99 G20. I'm sure he'll reply soon, so just sit tight!

Hey kids. I've been on a little vacation last week so I wasn't to active. I'm back now.

Anyway they won't make you car louder but the idle will be a little lumpy. If someone didn't know you had cams it might sound like you need a tune up. The JWT ECU will help the drivability a lot. I've had a couple (3 or 4) stalls in the year and a bit I've had the cams in. The JWT ECU should help with this as well.

Wow this Forum is pretty neat!! Thanks for you help, Now I think I'll go and find a place that sells these JWT S3 cams. Oh, one more question, do you think I'll pass a smog check with these cams?

Congratulations for reading the archives! Good job.

They will NOT create more engine noise. Your car will not stall (unless your car has other problems).

The only possible downside is the price of admission ($550). Now, if you were to price other camshaft sets, you would find these to be close to the lowest price. To top it off, they have the best performance. The JUN cams seem to be as good, but at double the price.

OMG, that is quite Expen$ive!!! But we all have to start somewhere, right? I would like more power, because the car is a little sluggish when accelerating. I just do not see a turbo in my future anytime soon, after reading all the turbo posts, it's a lot more money than I want to part with. I think "I'd" be better off just buying an already turboed car and upgrade from there!

I will probably call some places to order the cams in a few weeks, if they are available! Then I will probably order some suspension components for my car, the car handles great as is, but I'd like a more comfortable ride, these Eibach springs just aren't hacking it anymore.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate your input! Hope to see you online!

Yep. Welcome to the crazy world of flushing money down the toilet.

If you are just starting out, skip the cams and get a HotShot header. They list for $425 and will do more for you than any other mod. They don't add any noise either. Unorthodox Racing underdrive pulleys are another good mod that improve acceleration without adding noise. Then I would consider cams.
