Rev Limiter Question

Ok, I got my new exhaust about a week ago (dual Flows w/ h-pipe) and was showing it to a friend today. I've never really opened up my car, but I did today and it wouldn't let me get over about 4,250 rpms. That sucks because all the proformance mods you can buy are in vain if I can't get to my max HP rpms (5250). My car is a 99 v6 stang by the way, but a friend of mine has an 03 v6 and he pushes redline all the time. Is this my rev limiter? If so, are there any home remedies to get rid of it? I know you can calibrate a diablo chip to take it away, but that runs into my ever-present problem, money. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Rev Limiter Question

The question is were you sitting still or were you moving? The V6 has a 2 stage rev limiter sort to speak. I have a 02 V6 and when I'm not moving or not going over 10 mph I can't rev mine over 4250. But when I'm going over 10 mph I can get mine up to 5700.

Re: Rev Limiter Question

Don't feel bad, I ask the same question when I got mine. What other mod have you done to you're V6. All I've done to mine is a mac cold air kit.

Well, like I said I got those dual Flows w/ H-pipe. I got a K&N filter with an air silencer removal. I also removed a little disk inside the intake, past the filter that restricts a little (don't know what its called). I've got a used MAC cai that I bought off ebay, but I need a filter for it and it needs to be cleaned up a bit. That's all for performance, although I do have some new 17" bullet wheels in my garage. All I like is $38 and I'll have enough for some new Yokohama tires off ebay and I'll finally be rid of these 6-spoke 15's. I've had them in the local trader's helper for a few weeks. I'm asking $350 for the excellent condition wheels and my Michelin MX4 Rainforce's with about 50% tread. No serious calls yet though.

Why would you want to?My brother's '03 revs out easily to his chosen 6200 rpm shift point.Little stupid if you ask me,because when I race it and shift at 5500 it's two tenths quicker....all stock-for now

More like "He who hits factory rev limiter scores a piston because Ford is too stupid to realize what happens to an engine when fuel disappears at high RPM"

Well, OK that was too long.

Re: Rev Limiter Question

Considering that, say a stock 5.0 HO for example, makes all of its power at 4200 rpm,the number of "dudes" that whing 'em out to 6250(limiter) is surprising, and often tragic

Re: Re: Rev Limiter Question

I guess it really depends on the car and mods done. I actually could use to raise my rev limiter a few hundred rpms.

how many revs your motor is capable of depends primarily on your connecting rods, secondarily on your intake. you shouldn't have to worry about your limiter unless one or both of these things are changed.

and the block, and the crank, and the pistons, and the camshaft and...............

No matter what intake you have your heads and cam will determine where you run out of breath more. The bottom end is the real deciding factor since that's what flys apart eventually..

My builder told me I am good to 7000, but that's with lighter pistons and rods, and a good balance/blueprint job w/a main girdle. We'll see on the dyno next week, but I'm betting my iron gt-40s and Crane 2031 will run out of steam around 57-5800.
