Question Auto Trans Temperature Gauge?????

I have a 98 Rodeo - 2WD 3.2L Auto with 73K. I just got it and I have no maintenance records from the previous owner. So, just in case it hasn't been kept up, I want to change the tranny fluid at least (I haven't decided on doing the filter yet right now).

I've read all the posts and understand how to change the fluid and get a hand pump to get the new back in and all, but what I haven't seen anyone mention is something that my Haynes manual tells me I have to have.

According to my Haynes (and I quote): "Refilling the automatic transmission fluid on 1996 and later models requires the use of a special fluid temperature gauge (available from your dealer parts dept). Do not attempt to perform this procedure without this tool or damage to the transmission may occur."

So, I'm assuming they're talking about something to keep from putting cold fluid in the tranny but I've never heard of that being an issue and I've not seen anyone mention it here on the forums.

Is this one of those things that is just there for CYA purposes (so they don't get sued) or is it really something that I have to go to Isuzu and get?

I don't have the owner's manual handy as I type this, but it typically just tells you "when" to change fluids not "how" to do it yourself.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin.

you dont need the temp. gage. i went through the same thing, and stopped at my local honda dealer to ask them about it,a nd the mechanic said the gage was a joke and they dont even use it there.

Just drain the fluid, drop pan, change filter, re-install pan, pump a few quarts in, start it up and finsh filling as it warms up and the fluid gets hot.
