F150 Cold Start Problem
'97 F150 V-8 Triton seems to not maintain high idle during cold starts. Does anyone have any ideas what needs to be replaced? I am suspecting the IAC sensor. Also, if I replace, will the code reset itself? Thanks for your response.

4.6 Cold Start
We have the exact problem with the 4.6 V8 used in the Crown Vic police package. The Idle Air Control valve goes bad. This usually manifests on cold and damp days. The vehicle will turn over, sometimes crank but will not idle unless the accelerator is floored. Once the pedal is released the car shuts off. The valve is commonly found on on the back side of the intake manifold on top of the motor. It is a small silver cylinder about 2 inches in diameter. You can bang (carefully) on it with a small hammer or screwdriver butt and this will free the the stuck mechanism enough for you to drive the car. Once it is warm, it will usually continue to operate. I would replace it, however, at the earliest chance.

My truck does start every time. I just have to tap the gas pedal sometime for 20 seconds in order for it to start to idle. It does atleast start everytime i want it to. The colder it is, in general, the longer I have to tap the gas pedal.

The Idle Air Control Valve (or Idle Bypass Valve) is exactly what needed replacing. Bought a Motorcraft Valve at Bumper-to-Bumper Auto Parts for $55. The vehicle started, with high idle and runs like a charm. This is an easy level repair. Thanks for your input everyone.
