Steptronic gearbox doesn't work anymore !!!

I have a 2002 E46 320d and today I noticed that after I started the car whe I reached 2000 rpm in 2nd gear it doesn't go any further !!!!
After I reduced the volume of my stereo I also noticed a weird noise coming from I don't know where but is not loud. Actually what happens is after the car reaches 2000 rpm in second you still press the pedal but all you get is noise the car stays at 2000 rpm. Same thing happens when I switch on manual !!!!!! I can change to 3rd etc but the rpm doesn't go any further !
Does anything like this happened to anyone ???
