95 Chev horn pad removal

I'm trying to replace the multifunction switch and manual says "pull off horn pad". I have tried beating, prying and cussin' at it and it still won't come off. This vehicle has an air bag. Any suggestions?
The truck is a C2500

Mine is a square in the center of the wheel it just pops out(1988).

Did you try looking on the back side of the stearing wheel for 4 screw holes (2 on each side) ? You need a special pusher to get the anti-theft plate off or its almost impossible to get out to get down to the direction signal switch. Is it a tilt wheel ?

As far as the air bag .... I hope you have a factory manual 'cause that thing will give ya a hit you'll never forget. Sorry they scare the bajesus out of me.

Reminding me of the time a newbie bought a truck to plow with and the salesman told him not to worry about it. HAHAHA you should have seen his face after it went off. An expensive part too even not including the visit to the Emergency Room.

Well I finally got the damn thing off, no thanks to the factory manual. It has four tapered pins on the steering wheel part that go into plastic receiver blocks on the column and locking wires snap into grooves on the pins. It sure doesn't just "pull off" as the manual says. Maybe I missed something somewhere. I have pictures if anyone else needs help with this, just email me.
Thanks, Pamelarose for your thoughts and cautions! Those airbags scare me too, like driving around with a keg of gunpowder tied to your steering wheel. I guess they're good to have when you need 'em, but most of the time, they're just something else to worry about!

lmao Permission to use that quote ? That is so perfect!

Glad to see you got it apart safely. I always buy the factory Manual when I get a new ride. Some times things are not what they seem. There are times though when I see a mistake/misprint and shudder to think of the poor person who doesnt know better doing what they say. Maybe its a girl thing ... asking for directions

Happy Motoring

Pam

They may have been talking about the '94. I have a '94 and it does just pull off. But the '94 does not have the airbag.

Sure, Pam! Anyone with a name like Pamelarose and a cute little icon like yours is welcome to use anything of mine!

I always try to buy the right manual for the vehicle too, which is one reason I was pretty upset with GM/Helm on this procedure. Maybe Philo (prev post) has something there....they may have carried this part over from the '94 manual.

Re: 95 Chev horn pad removal

well it's nice to see you got it off safely. Normally you disconnect power for atleast 2 minutes first, then you have that damn special tool to hold the clips away from the groove. it usually pops out as soon as it clears the grooves. others doing removal, becareful, this was a good but lucky result. another note. if you have safety inspection in your state, make sure it is on and working. it is Federal to tamper or remove safety device.
