Question High oil pressure

I have a 1983, w/ 350 (5.7), 4x4, auto trans, Carbed (quadrajet).
It runs great for a truck with about 150,000 miles. The problem is the oil pressure. It runs about 60psi on the oil guage, when warm. I know that low oil pressure is a major problem, but what about overly high oil pressure? Most of the trucks that I have owned in the past w/ 350 motors ran about 45 psi. I don't think it is the gauge. When I took the air cleaner lid off, the area outside of the filter had motor oil laying in it and the crank filter was somewhat saturated. Not a lot but enough to make me concerned. It has a factory oil cooler attached just above the oil filter. Could something be clogging it up to cause this condition? There is no smoke from the exaust, no knock from the engine, it idles well, so I don't think it's a problem with the rings.

Any help or comment would be appreciated.

Re: High oil pressure

Too high pressure can cause some problems also. You'd rather be high than low. I would check pressure with a mechanical gauge before worrying too much. As I recall, 60 is maxed out on the GM gauge. If you're sure the gauge is good check your sending unit. It could be beginning to fail.

Re: High oil pressure

Hey Dan,
Thanks for the post. You're right 60 psi does peg the gauge. I don't know what happened but the problem has gone away. The pressure reading is now a steady 45psi.( which I think is pretty normal for a 350). I suspect there was some sort of stoppage in the cooler line. Anyway it's gone now.
Thanks again.
