Question 1997 Geo Tracker Service Engine Light

I have a '97 Geo Tracker, and the Service Engine light has been on for almost 2 years. I've had it looked at many times, but it still comes on. The last time I took it in, the guy said my tracker does not have a service interval switch that can be turned off. Is he for real? I have to get the light turned off in order to get a smog check. Please help me!!!

i think with the 97 model you have to use a computer to reset the light because of it being OBDII , you can try unhooking the -bat cable , if you want to look for a switch , it would be under the dash on the driver side , take the panel off under the sterring wheel and look to you left , if the 97 has one it will be there , you might have to take out the speaker ,if there is one all you have to do is slide it to the off position , hope this helps you

Re: 1997 Geo Tracker Service Engine Light

I have a 1994 GEO tracker that just turned 170,000 miles. And, my light came on. I found my “MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) CANCEL SWITCH” (Check Engine switch) directly behind the drivers-side speaker. Two ways to get to the switch:
(1) Remove the removable panel just below the steering column on the dash board. Next, get in a position to see the rear of the speaker and there it is!….. It’s right next to it (behind the speaker) just in index-finger range…..
(2) The second option is to remove the speaker cover, and then the speaker. Then simply reach around where the speaker WAS and there it is (the switch). Mine was a sliding switch. I simply slid the switch over. And, now my “check engine lamp” no longer stays on after engine is running.
Joe gets the credit for this info! Thanks :o)
