"Hydraulics" will ruin a car's handling.

Other than the added weight, it will stiffen the suspension to the point of causing the car to bounce on the slightest crack in the road. Basically because the pumps replace the shocks which are designed to eliminate the rebounding of the springs after they are compressed.

Hydaulics will make your friends car ride worse than an old Jeep with leaf springs. I would suggest air bags a hundred times over, especially for a Japanese import car if you really need ride height adjustment. Hydraulics are old and basically useless unless you intend to hop your car.

Re: hydrolics

hmmm, question: The (for example's sake) Lamborghini Diablo has some special pneumatics to lift the cra a few inches when going over speed bumps or high attack/departure angle driveways, hwo does this system work? Is it just small bags or some sort of super shock? mind you the car still has normal functioning suspension, although I'm told for cars such as the Diablo, don't drink and drive with a coffee.

I too have wondered this. I think it could be a small air bag specifically used to raise the front end. Or it could be built into the shock. Kind of like an air shock. But I still don't know.

im pretty sure the diablo (and cars with similar setups) use helper bags (to assist the coil springs) lots of trucks use this to keep it even when towing something big

Re: hydrolics

This depends on what you are going to do with the hydraulics? All high perfrmance cars use some sort of hyraulics system, it can be hydraulic activated clutches, differentials, power steering or even hydraulic actuators instead of conventional dampers.

The use of hydraulic actuators instead of conventional dampers was used by Williams in their F1 car in the earliy ninties. This system offers a superior suspension system which also was one of the reasons why it was banned from F1.

The system was design so that the car held a specific ride height. The constant ride height gives aerodynamic advantages but the car will also never roll in turns or change the yaw angle during braking or acceleration. It can also take bumps in the road much better since it can lift the wheels. This system is also superior to all commercially availible semi-active system, most using simple hydraulics to adjust suspension stiffness (some also use pneumatics).
