I had this problem in 2000 V6 Passat. Dealer replaced the valve cover gasket twice and it did not resolve it. Finally they replaced the cylinder head (power train warranty) and it was resolved.

Re: oil smell inside 2000 glx V-6

I have had this same issue. Has been to the dealer for this at least twice now. Although I thought the smell was a leak that was vaporizing. That is why it went in last time. Dealer ran tests last time(smoke test) to test for exhaust leaks. All gaskets have been replaced in the past 2years, so no more leaks. Just forwarded the link to this area to the dealer, as my power train warranty is up in less than 1000 miles. Surely the solution above will resolve the issue. They have really tried everything else. I decided to research one last time before giving up on VW.

Re: oil smell inside 2000 glx V-6

antifreeze leak was found near turbo, upon failed attempts to repair it, the dealer replaced the whole turbo. I took the car home and noticed the same smell...cleaned engine best I could with "gunk" cleaner and once the chemical smell went away from cleaning, the smog smell was back. Dealer checked for exhaust leaks and gaskets...all fine. When sitting at stop w/o air recycle on, all you smell is hot engine odor.standing near the car when running, same smell...Does anyone know what it is? Boschman...anyone? I am out of ideas and so is the dealer at this point.

Dealer still taking looks at this every few months. Still have smell. Friend refurb's corvettes, said that the smell might be that my waste gate is stuck open. Now starting to notice a swooshing sound when reving engine. Friend said waste gate probably just bad at this point and is now sucking air.

IDEAS?

Re: oil smell inside 2000 glx V-6

If you have a glx you dont have a 1.8t engine. The glx is the v6 engine. ANyway both engines have issues with leaky valve cover gaskets, BUT, also cam seals and can chain tensioner gaskets that leak oil. THe 1.8t have issues with the breather hoses and vacuum hoses under the intake manifold cracking and leaking oil out causing the oil smell. Just look under the intake manifold next to the coolant resivour and look for any oil residue.

Re: oil smell inside 2000 glx V-6

I have very similar symptoms. I had Timing Belt job done 1 month ago + most gaskets replaced, and after that I noticed a little bit of smoke coming from underneath the coolant container. Later I noticed that my mechanic had put too much coolant and it was leaking from the overflow valve onto the exhaust manifold and causing the smoke.
I fixed that by getting the coolant level to normal.

Now I can still smell the oil burning smell. I have been observing it a lot in last week and noticed that the smell is really bad + actual smoke comes from underneath the coolant reservoir ONLY when engine is cold started (in the morning). If the car is already warm, you can still smell it a little bit, but there is no smoke anymore.
Any ideas?
The car is a 2001.5 V6 GLX with 96K miles.

Thanks!

Re: oil smell inside 2000 glx V-6

99 1.8T 145K. I also have an oil smell in the car. The oil level is gradually goin down, but the oil does not drip on the driveway and no smoke comes out of the exhaust. When I add oil to the engine, then it seems like the smell comes more.

Also, the car has a hard time accellerating at times but not always, like sputtering.

Does anyone knows where the wastegate is located, or anything elde I can check?

Re: oil smell inside 2000 glx V-6

I would check the breather lines under the intake manifold and the brake booster line next to the coolant resivour (on the 1.8t engine)
