KA24DE build up help

here's the deal... my friend has an 89 240sx hatch sohc. the other night the timing chain "glide" inside the engine broke so naturally it threw off the timing and made things smack around in a very unpleasant way. he's screwed! until granny decided to put up the money for a new dohc KA. he plans to beef up the internals while we have it out to insure safety for his plans for the future ie boost. we need this done quick as he is leaving for the air force soon. here's what we need: recommendations on what internals to use. brand, size of pistons, valve springs etc etc. where to get them. and possibly an estimated price of each. i know this is quite a bit to ask but for the sake of drifting please help us out. or if you know a supplier that has a good customer service dept. that can help us out and supply what we need that would be helpful as well. if you have no experience in this but want to make a dumb comment, please don't. keep it to yourself, we're not interested in if you think he should go with the sr20 or anything of the sort. we're in a bind with a lack of time so we don't have any to waste. any suggestions will help out tremendously and will be much appreciated. thanks.

ps. if you happen to have a spare dohc ka laying around, we need that too.

also, any links to sites that would help out with the swap would aid us in many ways!!! so far all we have gathered is conflicting data that is very discouraging. thanks again.

do KA's from non240's require any modification that wouldn't be necessary if we used one from a 240? how about cams? i know with my mr2, the camry has the same engine but with less agressive cams. any of that come into play here? thanks again.

Re: KA24DE build up help

the most agressive cams came from a '91 240sx.

so u can jus swap cams i guess.

but the tranny on KA prolly has to be changed and i dujnno what other things, sorry i cant help that part alot, maybe other members would know, but its really nice to have like a 2001 KA in your car

i figured since its the same block as the sohc, the tranny would bolt up without any problems.

you could either get the cluster off of ebay..or just go the junkyard and rip one out of any fairly decent looking 240 there..make sure not mess any of the harness up though ;P

as for all the others..i would say junkyard is the way to go..unless you want to go to the dealership and get ripped.

believe me, going to the dealership is not an option! i have one asshole and i don't need another one ripped by the dealership.

the guys he got the engine from said he may be able to use his old distributor. is there any truth to this?

thank you guys for your help! we ended up just swapping the sohc for the stock dohc so we could have a little more time to research what exactly he wants to do. the day we started looking for a new engine he bought a KA24DE with 75k miles with tranny, ecu, & harness for $500. we found a salvage yard that had a bunch of parts we needed including the p/s resevoir, p/s pump, dist., coil, & maf. we still need throttle cables but we have the old ones rigged to work, it just doesn't look real good. the junkyard hooked us up like crazy! we made two trips there and both times we paid about half as much as the guy originally wanted. not to mention he stayed open an extra hour for us one of the times. we have the engine in and hooked up and it will crank but not quite turn over. we're about to go out and see which one we're not getting, fuel or spark, and go from there. we'll most likely be pulling it again in about a month after we find out the exact parts we need and have some time to think it through before we slap it together. i think we came out pretty well though. blew an engine on thursday, bought another on friday, and we'll have it running by the end of today (sunday). again, thanks for your help!

i'll be posting pics as soon as i get them resized and what not.

still no spark. pulled #1 plug wire, inserted screwdriver and held it close to bolt on top of strut tower to see if it would arc when we cranked the engine. no luck, so we tested it further back. pulled the wire from coil to dizzy and repeated with screwdriver. nothing. has to be wiring somewhere. we can't find any wiring diagrams anywhere so if anyone has one that would help out a lot. thanks again.
