tensioner

how exactly do i adjust the tensioner to get the serpentine belt loose? i need to replace the alternator but i can't get the tension out of the drive belt.

well, it depends on what year it is. some of them have a square hole in the end, either 3/8 or 1/2 inch that will fit a ratchet, get a long handled ratchet or slide a metal pipe over the handle for leverage, and use it to swing the tentioner off the belt, and pull the belt over the tensioer pully. on newer cars, there is a bolt in the center of the pully, it will be 13 or 15mm, use the same concept, only with a socket on the ratchet on that bolt, then use the ratchet to swing the pully away from the belt and pull it off.
