Water Pump Replacement - 1999 Jimmy

I am having some minor coolant leaking on my 99 Jimmy. It appears to only leak after topping off the coolant, then after a few days of leaking - about a cup or two of coolant, I don't see any leakage but the radiator is obviously low on coolant. I have been told that coolant is probably leaking out of the bleeder hole(?) and that i should be replacing the water pump. This has been going on for several months and I don't want to wait any longer if it is the pump. Does this sound like a water pump that needs replacement, and if so, does anyone know if special tools are needed to remove the cooling fan or any other parts? Any other words of wisdom would be appreciated as well!

Thanks.

Re: Water Pump Replacement - 1999 Jimmy

i had to replace my water pump
it,s very easy to do, the hard part is getting the fan off i used a air chisel and just hit the side of the the bolt on the fan to get it off because it hard to find a big wrench to fit in.it,s right handed threads not left handed like the fords

Water pump replacement on that engine is fairly straight foreward ( same as a small block chevy)
There is a special tool available to remove the fan/clutch assembly from the pump...It comes with the wrench and a holding tool.

Are you sure its the water pump? Have you pressure tested the cooling system? A loose hose clamp could be the culprit especially since you do not see any leaks the coolant could be evaporting on the hot engine. How many miles on this vehicle? Put some card board (large piece) under the vehicle especially when it is parked for a long while to see if it is leaking. Might even be the intake manifolf gasket if this is still a problem on you year vehicle. Also if you can crawl under the front of the vehicle with a light you should be able to see the bottom of the water pump. There is a small hole (weep hole) in the casting, if the pump is or has been leaking you will see stain around the hole.

good luck
