1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Just bought a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. It's been through a couple owners so I wound up with only one programmed key and no remotes for door locks. I have a source to get keys and remotes but can't find any info on programming either. The owners manual tells how to program the key but that sequence requires having two good ones and as I stated, I only got one. Can someone help me out here?

Re: 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

you can buy extra keys on ebay pretty cheap, then just have them cut to match your current key. You should be able to find the security keys, I just did a search and found a bunch...

You should also be able to get them at any dealer, but it will be pricey there..

Thanks, I just ordered two remotes from Ebay and I already have another security key. What I need to know now is how to program them.

Unfortunately if you only have one key you have to go to the dealer to have another programmed. After you have 2 programmed keys you can program from then on on your own (up to 8 I believe). I think for the Key fobs the dealer has to program them. I konw this is expensive but I don't believe there is a choice for you.

I would check out www.wjjeeps.com they have almost everything you need to know about the grand cherokee. If I remember that's where I got my info from. Also remember once a key has been programmed for a jeep it cannot be reprogrammed for another one.

good luck,

Re: 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I'm sure you may have programmed them by now, but for others who may be reading this post. nasdaqbull is right about having a dealer program the remotes for you. I think I got lucky, and the place I went to programmed them for free in about 2 minutes. I think the normal charge is about 10-15 bucks.

I haven't had a fob need programming. But for my spare key. I bought it on ebay for 20USD (I'm in Canada) cut it at the dealer (the guy was cool and didn't charge me but probably about $5 for that) and then I programmed following the instructions in my owners manual.

The dealer wanted 75$ CAD (~$55USD) just for the key. plus $25 ($20USD) to program it. goes to show how easily money can get stollen from you.

that wjjeeps website is awesome. Anything I need to do I check there first.
