Re: Lock up or non Lock up

lockup is for newer overdrive tannies, at highway speeds an internal clutch engages with an electronic solenoid. giving you the slip free function of a manual, for better gas mileage. drops revs by about 300-400 rpm when it clicks on. standard converters have around 5% slippage. all that slippage is waisted power and gas. but then again, converters with alot of slippage have higher stall points. which are better for racing. so the lockup gives you the option for high stall, and highway cruizin. best of both worlds, hooray for progress.

Yea what he said. But it should be noted that unless you cheat the computer and make it do this. At wide open throttle, the converter does not lock up. It does this because that little clutch is not designed to take the full power from an engine. Making the converter lock up under WOT should be done sparingly. I have already smoked one converter over doing that

I personally perfer a lock up. But I don't have a full blown race car. Personally I would like to have one of thoes switch pitch turbo 400's. Buick had them in the '60's. Refined in 2002. My uncle just bought one. He ill launch with a 4000 stall. but after 1st gear is will accually move the veins in the torque converter. His will lock down to about 1k. IMO that would be perfect for drag racing. It's not a bad price. about 1,600 dollars. That is a shiped turbo 400 built to handle anything you can throw at it with the switch pitch technology.
