Help me out, need color shading tips!(PICS)

I really could use some tips on color shading (or is color rendering?, whatever) I post some line drawings that I have done that I want to color. What I usually do is I sketch it out, outline sketch, and add color this is where I also mess up. So please give some useflful info.

Re: Help me out, need color shading tips!(pics later)

PICS!!! So here they are I could really use rendering in color tips, like how other people go about making the decisions on what color to use how to blend them, etc. Even if it is recomending a book, website or the like. I am really bad with color and it is to the point where I just will not even attempt to add color to something that I invest time into, so holla back at the kid with some stuff I can use to get over this hump

And I want to do this one life size and put on my wall: MJ

tokes, ok. here we go. first off: get heaps of car references from dealerships. there is crisp photography of cars in a myriad of environments. there is rain, sun, dusk, city lights, countryside. everything. get about a dozen to twenty dealer brochures. if they try to sell you a car, say your dad sent you and he is maybe interested. then say bye.

next: get a book on airbrushing automobiles. you may need to hunt for this kind of book. go to an art store. or a used book store. be very deliberate about copying the airbrush/watercolor technique of building up layers of transparent color. and leaving white for highlights.

next: go out an buy a wide variety of ad markers. stock up on blues, from very light to medium to dark, a full tone array of warm and cool greys. light sand, pale yellows, etc. spend about $200 on markers.

there is more. this is just the setup...

next: as a student, and professional alike, it is essential to learning to look at actual cars. look at how the reflections behave under different conditions. and copy this. draw what you see. after doing this again and again, you will be able to invent your own reflections and enviroments from your imagination.

i am rather advanced in this, yet i still use "morgue" references constantly as a springboard.

remember that there is a learning curve to using materials seriously. you may find that you hate ad markers as they are very "loose." but that is too bad for you.

Re: Help me out, need color shading tips!(pics later)

ok! that is some good stuff, and the multiple posts helped, because I probably would not have read through all of it if it were in one post. Sometimes I think I have ADHD.

I can do the car references, my dad before he passed away was a car dealer, and I still have a bunch of his brochures for car makers and auto shows.

I have been looking for a good airbrushing book for a looong time, have not found a good one that talks in depth about technique.

Add markers? Are the anything like prismacolor markers I just bought some of those on an instructors reccommendations but only basic colors. Have not used them on anything, which is why I am asking about rendering in color.

Working on drawing what I see, I started taking my sketchbook out and drawing things that catch my eye.

Thanks for the compliment but I know have a long way to go before I truly can agree with your compliment.

Way oof the topic: The movie Minority Report is seriously, seriously, SERIOUSLY dope!

Oh yeah what about, people although I think I can draw people pretty propotionally, do the same techniques apply? I been looking my sketchbook recently and I want to redo a couple of my Micheal Jordan drawings full size and in color.

Re: Help me out, need color shading tips!(pics later)

tokes99, work on your elipses (wheels in perspective). you can draw the car body fine. so move on. focus on your wheels. they are not as fun to draw as the car body, but they will make the whole car look like sh!t if you do them poorly. doing correct elipses will separate the men from the boys. i see so many people incapable of good elipses. it is an art all in it's own.

similar, not same, rules apply to coloring animals and people. actually, coloring a car is FAR easier, as it is sheetmetal with large areas of the same thing. skin is much more unforgiving and will look dumb if done badly. i'm sorry your dad is gone. i like the movie "jacob's ladder." for my site, go to: www.visualhomage.com

Re: Help me out, need color shading tips!(pics later)

prismacolor markers dry out too soon. find Chartpak. but keep yours. use anything and everything; chartpaks are juicier. also, use a cloth to mimic the airbrush technique when doing sheetmetal and glass and sky. dab the marker nib directly on a cloth and then use it to feather on the color. over time, if you do it correctly, you will see results. initially, you may become frustrated because the marker is controlling you. or, rather, is out of control. your job is to tame the bish. if you stick with it, you can do amazing things. it will look like paint. my visual homage site has a picture on it with an explosion. that whole drawing was done with marker. there are slight highlites of pencil and gouache. but is about 99% marker.

Yes elipses are killers, I have been trying to get them down but I am too lazy to do them the right way, and then there is the short attention span. The airbrush is a great tool, and once I get a decent one...
