Strange Misfiring Problem

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can tell me why my MK4 Ford Escort 1.6 EFI Cabriolet is misfiring?!

Problems:

1 - Hesitation on acceleration – all speeds

2 – When the clutch is in whilst moving, cars revs drop and car stalls

3- Top-End speed very poor (car drones)

4 – Car as if it is choking?!

I have checked and replaced all plugs and HT Leads but there is an air vacuum missing off of my EFI (top right hand side) – which I was told was a map sensor?
(one end plugs into EFI and the other part plugs into a wiring box.

I am a bit hesitant to replace it as it is £123.50!! – What do you ppl recon – could it be anything else?

Also, what (if any) other problems may my car incur with it like that?

I just spent ten minutes writing you a detailed list of things to do to solve your problems only to find out that the web site logged me off while I was writing and deleted everything I wrote, so I will try and use the quick message. Look at replacing your idle bypass valve which is located over the throttle butterfly. With age these become clogged and no longer open at the right time to allow extra air for the engine to breathe when the throttle is closed. The misfiring is most likely caused by arcing to the block due to old spark plug wires. replace with Motorcraft factory wires and I think this will solve your problem. I tried using a store brand on this car and had to go to the factory ones.

Mallett, Have you checked the timing belt. If your car is over 60k its usually time to change it. It sounds exactly what happened to my escort when it needed a time belt replacement.
