99 Windstar Tune Up

I'm new to this forum so sorry if this has already been covered.
My 99 is idling kind of rough so thought it might be time for a tune
up. What do you recommend replacing for a tune up on this vehicle?
Distributor rotor, plugs, plug wires, etc.? Any information would be
helpful. Thanks.

I would start by pulling off the air intake duct & do a thorough cleaning of the intake & throttle plate area with a sensor safe carburetor/intake cleaner (with van running). Sray thru the PCV line, remove & clean the EGR valve & ports (if you can get at it on the '99) + spray thru the brake vacuum booster line as well. Pull replace the spark plugs. I'm an advocate of using whatever brand came with it from the factory (motorcraft platimums I think?) Put a tiny dab of anti-sieze on the plug threads & grease the boots with a di-electric silicone grease as well. Your plug wires should be okay still, but then again, while you are in there, may not be a bad idea to replace them as well. I like factory originals with these as well. You have no distributer cap/rotor, so don't let anyone "replace" those for you .

My wife just had a tune up w/ the sysmptom you just had. They replaced everything you mentioned. She teels me that the light is off and it drives alot better. It has more power than before the tune-up. I would recommend it. Unless you know how to do it yourself. Just give it a shot.

Another thing to keep in mind is- run a bottle of chevron techron CONCENTRATE in a full gas tank about 3x a year. Do it when you are close to an oil change as fuel system cleaners tend to work their way into the oil. Get the 20oz bottle & make sure it's the "concentrate" and not the cheapy brands of techron/proguard. a 20oz bottle is about $9 at target/wally/advance auto/autozone. This stuff is the strongest, safest over the counter fuel system/ intake / combustion chamber cleaner you can get. Works wonders at keeping yout internals clean!
