Spoon Headers.....

I hear so much different crap about them, can someone set the record straight for me....ok, Spoon Headers are not carb. legal.....so as long as I am not in Cali. will I get a ticket? Just curious or should I just stick with some nice JDM Type R headers....and one more thing, someone who has JDM tails can they take a pic. with their brake light on and post it...thanks!

I didn't have a carb legal header on my zc and it passed emissions and the inspection. I have never been ticketed for it so my guess would be as long as you are not in california you will be fine.

Actully MADTOWN a friend of mine tested a bunch of headers and he said TODA was best overall but the toda and spoon have about the same hp advantage 14-19hp.

spoon headers are nothing special. here's a dyno with all spoon stuff on a type-r engine.

Is that at the wheels or at the flywheel?
If its at the flywheel then whoever built and tuned the engine should be shot.
If its at the wheels then thats a rather nice power increase.

well, im assuming since this is a dyno graph, it's calculated at the wheels. ITR baseline is approximately 160whp. and from over probably a few thousand dollars of Spoon aftermarket stuff, that's a minimal gain. considering you can get the same gains with just about anything else. take your pick of aftermarket parts. be it AEM, Crower, etc. the point is Spoon is not the best. for example. here is a dyno of a basically stock gsr engine with less mods than that ITR making well over 176whp.

all im saying is...there's nothing special about Spoon other than a name brand.

Well the B18c in the 2nd graph is running Jun Type 3 cams which are pretty wild, and require new retainers and springs.
While the Spoon equiped engine is only running "spoon cams" with no mention as to what spoon cams. We dont know if they are a mild street grind or a semi race grind.

Theres also no information about how well each engine was tuned.

Basicly a couple of dyno runs with differnt parts do not prove anything.

Ill agree that spoon parts are over priced, but then everything that comes out of Japan tends to be overpriced, and you have to wonder how much of that is from Dutys, currency differnces and marketing tactics.

yeah, it's overpriced for sure and it's also not the best thing out there. to the disbelief of many people. i can also show you dynos of gsr engine using stock honda ITR and CTR cams, dc header, thermal exhaust and still making more than that Spoon engine. all i want people, not you specifically, but anyone that Spoon isn't the best thing since sliced bread as far as honda's aftermarket is concerned. i personally don't understand what the big deal is. :flash: the dyno runs with different parts does prove that Spoon parts aren't the best performing parts out there. that's my point.

well, I will add this, not saying Spoon is the best but I would have to see the miles on the engine, last oil change on the cars and ect.... when the dynos were run and such and juts from personal note, I think it is easier to get power out of a GSR than a Type R.

No all it shows is that those spoon parts do not give the same peak hp as those Jun parts.

You could build an engine with some wild race only Spoon cams and some mild Jun Street cams and get the exact oposite results, proving by your reasoning that Spoon is better.

I think you really need to do a little more resurch into what spoon offers when compared to other aftermarket parts manufactors before you start saying bad things about them.

i know what Spoon offers in comparison to other aftermarket companies. and i think the same of them as i do just about any other aftermarket company. it's all basically the same. but as you said, it gives you power in differnet areas in the RPM range. once again, nothing is better than anything else. they just want you to pay more for the name. as far as im concerned when you buy Spoon, you're paying for bragging rights. because of the entire JDM-fad that's consuming the import crowd at the moment. maybe i just don't understand the hype behind JDM parts. i do believe that Jun, Toda, and Spoon all make very high-quality parts that do exactly what the manufacturers say they will do. i guess it's all a matter of personal preference. i don't look down on anyone for buying Spoon, Toda, or Jun for any reason, i don't care. it just makes me wonder if some of these individuals actually looked into what they were buying instead of spending the money on some Spoon cams or Spoon header or anything Spoon, just because it's Spoon and they didn't compare it to another manufacturer. lates :smoker:

Eh...I don't really like the spoon engine components either, their stuff is mostly modified OEM parts, and I believe their cams are regrinds. It's good stuff, don't get me wrong, but money can be spent elsewhere. I would rather go with Jun, Toda, or Skunk2. Thats just me though. The crower stuff is good as well. But for the price of spoon, you can get something better.

What your saying now makes a lot more sense, and to some degree I totaly agree with you.
For things like Pistons and rods then I tend to buy what ever is avlaible and at a pricce I can afford. But for parts like Cams, intakes and Ported Heads I always have and when looking at the results always will go to a performance tuner and get a custom set up made. If you find someone who knows what thier doing then its often cheaper, and the results can be a lot better than an off the shelf head and cam package.
