Question gasoline odor from ac/heater

has anyone had a problem with the constant smell of gas when they have the ac/heat fan on and the fresh air/circulate air slide set to fresh air?

Yes, I've had a problem with a sulphur smell since I bought my 2003 Corolla in April of 03. The service departments (I've talked to people at more than one) tell me it's "normal" for cars in the midwest to have this problem because of the high sulphur content in the gas. They said it happens on other makes as well. I was told to buy a better brand of gas like BP or Shell, but I've done that and the problem persists. It seems to be worse when the fresh air intake is used, although you can smell it immediately after exiting the vehicle if you have the recirculate button on.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough people with 2003 Corollas to take a poll - but a friend's daughter-in-law has one and has no such problem. I suspect this is happening on American made Toyotas (that's what I have), but I haven't been able to get this woman to confirm from her VIN where hers was made. She seems to think it was made in Canada, so I don't know what that means.

My sister turned me on to this web site and said she'd seen letters from others who have had he same problem. I don't think this is "normal" - or it shouldn't be unless they list that as one of the "selling points". Also,I work with a man who worked in a parts department (not of a Toyota dealer) and said they were having problems with this and that HIS dealership fixed it. Had something to do with a faulty oxygen sensor or the catalyctic converter.

If you want to e-mail me and maybe we can get some others together who are having this problem, maybe we can get something done.

My e-mail address is: [email protected]
